In your opinion, what would you say have been the most life changing books you've read?
haha it’s so hard to ask that to an English major but I’ll try my best. I have so many favourite novels but here are the books that have changed my life.
Rapt: Attention and the Focused Life - I read this book a few years ago and it really changed my everyday life and habits. I never talk down to myself and am more conscious of my habits because of this book.
Lucid Dreaming: The Power of Being Awake and Aware in Your Dreams - this book taught me how to lucid dream and it’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced.
Solaris - I read this book for my literature and psychology class. It’s about this psychologist who is sent to the planet Solaris. All the scientists on board are having emotional breakdowns because the ocean on Solaris brings to life what each member of the ship most desires. Sometimes what we desire will drive us crazy. For the main character, the psychologist, the ocean on Solaris brings back his lost love one, who committed suicide because of something he did. The reincarnation drives him crazy though, because she is how she existed in his mind - not how she actually was. Similar to how the character in Inception is obsessed by his guilt for his wife’s death. Solaris is a really beautiful book.
The Prophet by Kahil Gibran is another really beautiful book. It’s not prophet in the religious sense but the original meaning as in “bringer of truth.”
The Book of Longing - I tend to not like poetry but this book is so different. If you’re feeling angsty or full of longing this book is perfect ;)
